ALERT: If you have recently received a letter from a company called “College Financial Advisory” based in San Diego, CA, please note that this company is NOT affiliated with the federal government, College Board, or UNC Greensboro. The letter advises students to apply for financial aid programs by completing the “Student Aid Profile” and sending $48. This is NOT how students apply for federal, state, and institutional aid programs at UNC Greensboro.
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, FAFSA, is a free federal application. It is used by schools to evaluate a student’s financial aid eligibility. Please do not pay to apply for financial aid as the process is FREE!
Your financial aid locked hours will be set to the hours for which you are enrolled at 11:59 pm on Friday January 18, 2008. Winter session courses are considered part of the spring term and will be included in your spring locked hours. Dropped courses during the winter session will be reviewed and if dropped after the deadline for the winter session drop, will be included in your locked hours for spring. Please contact a financial aid counselor if you have questions.
Most aid types require that you complete a federal application called the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You must do this online at www.fafsa.ed.gov
UNCG’s School code is 002976 and our priority filing date is March 1 of each year. By filing your FAFSA by this date, you would have the best opportunity to receive grants and scholarships from UNCG.
If the amount of grants, scholarships, or fellowships received last year is greater than the amount of tuition, fees, and qualified course related expenses (such as mandatory books, supplies, and equipment) then you would report the difference on your tax return. The amount is reported on the line for Wages, Salaries, Tips, etc. (on Form 1040A/1040 Line 7 or Form 1040EZ Line 1) along with any other income you would have reported there. Also, enter “SCH” and the amount on the line in between “W-2” the answer for line 7 of the Form 1040A/1040 or line 1 of the Form 1040EZ.
In an attempt to provide some guidance on this question, complete the worksheet below to help determine how much (if any) scholarship, grant, or fellowship funds should be reported to the IRS. This is an unofficial interpretation of the guidance provided by the IRS in Publication 970. Please read IRS Publication 970 or consult your tax preparer for more information.
Complete the worksheet using the information from your 2006 Form 1098-T. If you do not have your Form 1098-T, you may view it on UNCGenie. See below for instructions.
You must also report your grant, scholarship, or fellowship earnings on Worksheet C of the FAFSA or Renewal FAFSA. By reporting your earnings on Worksheet C, the grant, scholarship, or fellowship income will be excluded from the financial aid formula even though the earning were reported on your tax return.
